Simple really - Peter purchased the eleven metre boat Predator to sail in the single-handed race from Plymouth, England to Newport, Rhode Island. It is a 3000 mile slog against the prevailing wind and currents.

He has competed several times before. First in an old gaffer, Golden Vanity, in 1972 when he took 88 days, a record which still stands! Then three more in his junk rigged schooner, Galway Blazer, before sinking in his fifth race.

The boat sank in two minutes and Peter was rescued from his tiny liferaft after six hours by a container ship. All his previous sailing adventures are recorded in his book "Single-Handed Sailing in Galway Blazer" and yes! you can get it when you visit the Green Dragon.

In 1998 and 2002 Predator took part in the Round Britain and Ireland Race an event for 2 man crews. In the latter race she came in a great 12th place in horrendous conditions which decimated over half the fleet.

In 2003 and 2007, Peter also took part in the AZAB (Azores And Back) single handed race.
He has now seriously put the boat up for sale as he needs something a little bit more stable!. You can also sail aboard Predator for a day or two with Peter. |
